Arts and Crafts Home Once Owned by Wedgwood Designers For Sale in Gloucestershire

A historical thatched property formally home to Alfred Hoare and Ada Louise Powell, influential figures of the English Arts and Crafts movement, has just entered the market in Gloucestershire.

The Thatched House, previously two eighteenth century cottages, is a Grade II listed home set in an elevated position within glorious woodland. Owned by the creative couple from 1906 to 1910, they lived here during a key moment in their careers as designers for Wedgwood.

The home was built to impress. Noted by Historic England as being ‘remarkably unaltered’, it has a traditional thatch roof, a large reclaimed six-light stone mullion, new fixtures and fittings, a marble shower, and underfloor heating. While the property fell into disrepair in the early 2000s, the current owners spent four years restoring it to its former glory.

There’s heaps to enjoy inside, including elegant reception rooms (there are three), an original spiral staircase rising to first floor landing, a wood-burning stove, vaulted ceilings, a dining room with bespoke designed oak book-end veneer units, plus a media room for relaxing after hours.

Head outside and you’ll find sweeping views of the velvety green countryside, fuss-free flowering herbaceous borders and varying terraced levels — ideal for lazy summer dining. It’s clear the whole outdoor space has been designed with care, but the real star of the show is a large lime tree planted by Alfred Powell himself.

Current owners, Andrew and Diana McGavin, say: ‘We were looking for somewhere to live that would be peaceful, and Tunley, a hamlet of just seven houses, was just that. Not only does the house brim with an incredibly rich history, the landscape within which it sits is nothing short of astonishing. It is incredibly tranquil and yet just a short distance from all the amenities of modern life; a place of solace but seamlessly connected.’

Sebastian Hipwood, who is marketing the property for Savills Cirencester, adds: ‘The Thatched House is a truly exceptional property, both architecturally-speaking and in terms of its heritage. It strikes the balance between being a wonderful piece of Arts and Crafts history and an incredibly versatile and immaculately finished home, which makes it one of the most exciting properties I have seen in my agency career.’

Situated in a Conservation Area and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, new owners will never get bored here. With wonderful farmer’s markets, good schools and a handful of shops nearby, it’s perfect for anyone after a more peaceful way of life.

This property is currently on the market for £1,850,000 with Savills.
