BRAINERD — The topic of the 2023 Lakes Space Songs Competition year is “Bel canto,” Italian for “beautiful singing.” This concept will be apparent during all performances, with heaps of vocal programming, a bel canto style opera generation and much more.
At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, the firm will present a chamber songs concert titled “Songs with out Words” at the Gichi-ziibi Centre for the Arts in Brainerd. Instead of relying on the human voice for singing, this system will aspect how musicians “sing” through their devices.
Pianist Henry Kramer will present a set of “Songs without the need of Words” by Felix Mendelssohn, as nicely as his sister Fanny Hensel Mendelsohn. A string quartet will perform the middle motion of George Walker’s “Lyric” quartet violinists Suliman Tekalli and Qianwen Shen of New York City, and violist Samantha Rodriguez and cellist Madeleine Kabat of Milwaukee.
Prize-winning trumpeter Ansel Norris will engage in his personal arrangements of songs by the French composer Claude Debussy.
The second half of the method will aspect the piano quintet by Robert Schumann. A German composer of the 19th century, Schumann wrote a lot of music for voice and piano and the tune-like qualities weave their way into this melodic and joyful quintet for piano and strings.

He will speak about the historical context and themes of the repertoire staying performed, on stage commencing at 6:45 p.m.
