Melinda Watt, Chair and Christa C. Mayer Thurman Curator of Textiles, and Jordana Munk Martin, founder of the textile-based mostly archive, library, and journal TATTER, examine Morris and Company’s enduring aesthetic and its affect on contemporary arts and crafts.
About the Speaker
Jordan Munk Martin conceived of and released a distinctive textile study place and adjacent schooling facility in Brooklyn, NY, for the purpose of textile research, visible inspiration, and scholarship. Blue: The Tatter Textile Library is house to over 6,000 publications and textile objects. The adjacent workshop gives above 50 workshops for each year as perfectly as e-book situations and gatherings. Programming steers toward a preservation of ethnographic textile procedures within modern day themes. Guests to the library include artists, designers, costumers, historians, and far more. The library includes partial or entire individual libraries of Edith Wyle, Carol Westfall, Cora Ginsburg, and Jordana Munk Martin. Martin also serves as the editor-in-chief of TATTER Journal.
Beforehand, Martin was curator and writer of Materials Cultures (Bric Arts Media, Brooklyn, NY), a group exhibition that includes the work of eight contemporary visual artists who interact with and react to essential elements of textile: weaving, pattern, draping, embellishing, and carrying, highlighting profound connections to record, ritual follow, cultural identity, inventive expression, and politics. Martin was also a co-founder, mentor, and creating instructor for the artist-in-residency method for the Textile Arts Centre in Brooklyn, NY. She obtained her BFA from Brandeis University, an MFA in portray from Rhode Island University of Layout, and an associate degree in surface layout from the Fashion Institute of Technological know-how.
